EN 14651 beam-test method

A controlled way to document flexural tensile response, with the published scope and polymer-fibre use boundary stated before any result.

Reference EN 14651:2005+A1:2007

Test method for metallic fibre concrete — measuring flexural tensile strength (LOP and residual)

BSI standard record →
01 / Purpose

Load response, limit of proportionality and residual flexural tensile strength values for the tested specimen series.

02 / Published scope

Published scope: moulded metallic-fibre concrete specimens; polymer-only use must be identified as a referenced or project-approved test framework.

03 / Laboratory status

Factory-internal, not accredited. Internal results are reference data.

What this method can answer

EN 14651 measures the flexural tensile response of moulded, notched beam specimens. The published method provides a limit of proportionality and residual flexural tensile strength values at defined post-crack stages. These values describe the tested specimen and mix; they do not by themselves design a floor, precast element or reinforcement replacement.

Important scope boundary: the published scope of EN 14651:2005+A1:2007 is metallic fibre concrete and certain combinations that include metallic fibres. When Conchip uses the test arrangement to study polymer-fibre concrete, the record must state whether the work only references the method framework or follows a project-approved test plan. This website does not claim automatic EN 14651 conformity for a polymer-only trial.

Method outline

  1. Identify the concrete mix, fibre product and batch, dosage, specimen series and intended comparison.
  2. Record specimen preparation, casting, curing, dimensions and notch preparation.
  3. Load the beam in the defined test arrangement while recording load and crack-mouth opening or the permitted deflection measurement.
  4. Retain the raw curve, calculated values, equipment and calibration reference, deviations and observations.
  5. Report results only with the specimen, mix, dosage, age and source attached.

Where the record can help

A properly documented beam record can support comparison and project discussion for flooring or precast work when residual flexural performance is relevant. Acceptance criteria, structural use and any reinforcement change remain the responsibility of the project specification and qualified designer.

Minimum record attached to a result

  • record and sample identity;
  • concrete or mortar composition and specimen age;
  • fibre product, batch and measured dosage;
  • preparation, curing and test conditions;
  • test equipment and method reference;
  • raw curve and reported values;
  • source type, deviations and limitations.
